About the Program
Sutherland Scholars is a summer program offered at no cost for students from historically black colleges and universities. Spearheaded by Sutherland partner and Diversity Committee Chair Allegra Lawrence-Hardy, the Sutherland Scholars program is an initiative to ensure the success of minority students in law school. As a longtime member of the firm's Hiring Committee and a frequent speaker at minority law student events, Lawrence-Hardy noticed that many minority students who often did well in college did not thrive in the law school environment. The program, launched in Atlanta during the summer of 2005, focused on students from Spelman and Morehouse colleges. In the summer of 2006, Howard University students participated in a similar curriculum in Sutherland's Washington office. Lawrence-Hardy explained, "I had a vision of teaching students how to succeed right out of the gate, not after a semester or two. I want them all to get straight A's immediately. We expect this program will supply these students with the necessary tools for a successful first year." We know how scary and challenging that first year of law school can be. The Sutherland Scholars program helps to demystify law school by exposing students to everything they will need to be successful in that first year. Sutherland attorneys and other legal professionals lead intensive four-hour classes including:
